有一天，屋里的孔雀、大象、蝙蝠、小鸟、小猫都在，小猫说：“这个屋子太小了，大家都住不下，要不再把木屋建大一点吧。”大家都同意了，可是孔雀不同意，大家说：“要是你不同意，我们建好了不让你住。”孔雀大摇大摆的说：“我才不住你们的屋子呢。”大家没有搭理它就开工了。
一个月，一个月慢慢的过去了。已经冬天了，从前优雅的孔雀不再那么自豪了，它还在想那些小动物会不会冻死了。可是，有一天它回到以前的小木屋，看见了很小的屋子变成了一栋高楼，小孔雀感觉它们都住在这栋楼里了，它也想住进去，它就进去了，可是被高大的大象拦住了，大象说：你没有出力，所以不能进去。这时孔雀有点后悔了。
天气越来越冷了，孔雀很快就冻死了。
这个故事说的是：只有勤劳的人，才能过上美好的生活。
