That's the total number of e-mails I received just in May, and it's about my average. That's not counting the hundreds and hundreds of messages Gmail dumped into categories for promotional mail, forum posts, and social networking updates. I've become proficient at jumping through messages quickly, but there's one thing I've mastered even more than that: spotting a lack of confidence.
I also take quite a few cold calls--people who are not really sure what I do and have not really done too much research but have me on a phone list for some reason.
In most cases, it's a pitch about a product or someone asking a question about marketing to journalists. He or she might say he or she "usually" does something. In a few cases, it's someone with a business idea he or she "suspects" will be perfect. Most of the time, these messages are straightforward--the sender isn't messing around. But a few seem hesitant. I fire back a question, and the response makes me question the person's authority on the subject.
These words are not always triggers about confidence level, but they are my first signal that something is amiss. They make me think the sender is not that sure about the product or service. And they are dead giveaways that I need to question what the person says.
1. Might
Be careful when you tell people you "might" do something. Are you sure about that? No one is asking you to solve world peace. When you say you "might" finish a report, it implies you lack some ability, don't manage your time well, or have too many priorities.
2. Won't
Here's an obvious word to avoid in your emails. Anyone who says he or she "won't" do something or "won't" attend a meeting is generating a negative vibe. Be more decisive: Either accept an invitation or reject it; using the word won't suggests hesitancy.
3. Usually
This is a trigger word in email that makes it obvious to everyone that you don't have all the facts. If you say the accounting department "usually" doesn't approve your expense report or the boss is "usually" late to work, it means you're stretching the truth.
4. Suspect
Unless you are talking about a suspect in a trial, avoid saying you "suspect" anything. You're not Sherlock Holmes. Just use direct terms: You know an investor is pulling out of the project, and here's why; or you have facts to support your conclusion on a new marketing plan.
5. Impossible
I'll bet Mark Zuckerberg has never used the word impossible in an email. The recipient will lose confidence in you quickly. State why something might be hard or difficult or just don't agree to a course of action. Don't bother telling people it's impossible.
6. Worried
We all worry about the stresses of life. Telling people you are worried by email makes it seem as if you lack confidence in your abilities. If you are worried, don't bother saying that to anyone--just express what you are concerned about and offer solutions.
7. Confused
Expressing your confusion will create even more confusion. It's better to just say what you are confused about and ask questions. Saying you are "confused" gives people the impression that either you don't understand something or that the topic is confusing to you.
8. Need
We all have needs in life. When you express those needs by email over and over again, it makes you look needy. I "need" you to come to work early, I "need" you to get that report done. Avoid saying "need" and express requirements more directly.
9. Quandary
Have you sent a message and said you were in a "quandary"? You should know that the word means you are in a total state of perplexity. I mean, you are really perplexed. That's not often the case when it comes to a new business proposal or fundraising round.
10. Likely
Few of us are in the business of predicting the future. If you say something is "likely" in an email, you are expressing to the recipient that you are not really sure about the topic, and you don't have all the facts yet. It's likely that you just lack confidence.
Stressful situations are sometimes inevitable. Each of us perceives challenges in their own way and reaction to them also varies. How stressful our life is depends not only on us. Other people influence it as well, and this is something we cannot change. Or can we?
What if we do not try to change others (which is a fairly hopeless task), but rather try and change our attitude to stress and tension that we often experience at work?
1. Stretching
Stretching releases muscle tension that accumulates in your back, shoulders, and neck during the day.
2. Do a short workout
Even when your day is extremely busy, do your best and set aside at least 5-10 minutes to do some exercise. There are plenty of exercises you can practice that do not require any special equipment: yoga, oxycise or simple squats – you can pick any kind of workout to your liking. Physical activity will boost your energy level and help you calm down. Working out is beneficial for both your body and mind.
3. Drink a cup of herbal tea
Herbs work miracles. Some of them, such as chamomile and peppermint, are a powerful tool helping to fight stress and anxiety. NASA scientists have recently carried out research into the effect of herbs and found out that peppermint scent decreases tiredness by 20% and reduces frustration by 25%. Make a smarter choice and, while at work, drink herbal tea instead of coffee.
4. Take a stroll
Once you find yourself in a different surrounding, you will feel much better. It’s great if your office is located in an environmentally clean place, for example, near a city park. You can then refresh yourself and relax a bit before you pe back into your working routine. If your office is situated in a busy city center, then you can spend your lunch break in a sidewalk cafe. Order your favorite drink and distract yourself by watching people go by.
5. Have a chat
Call someone who you know can understand and support you when you feel stressed. Avoid those who you think can increase anxiety and stress. A study shows that communication with close people, such as your friends or parents, produces oxytocin in your body—the hormone that is needed to successfully fight tension and stress.
Everyday interactions such as striking up a conversation or taking part in one might not be a piece of cake when English is not your first language. Some people are scared of making mistakes, others don’t feel confident about speaking English because they feel clumsy and awkward. Why sometimes is it so difficult to speak fluently even though we know all the English grammar rules from A to Z?
Could there be a place where you can express yourself just like you do in real life, but without worrying about the way you speak or the mistakes you make. That place is theatre.
The good news is that drama never stops helping us to explore life. Whether we want to work on our self-confidence, self-efficacy in public speaking or to learn a foreign language, drama is one of the best ways to achieve results.
This is the magic of drama and the reason why drama boosts the learning process. When drama meets the field of education, it can transform a traditional lesson into an exciting learning experience.
The Three-Body Problem spans multiple decades and characters, but it zooms in on Ye Wenjie and Wang Miao, two scientists in the very near future. Wenjie is an astrophysicist, while Miao is a nanotech engineer, and he's been swept up in a virtual-reality, online video game called Three Body that's so deeply metaphysical, it's begun to resemble a cult.
Either of these premises alone would be make for a rich SF novel, but Cixin Liu is only getting warmed up. By the time the book hits its peak, it's unveiled a conspiracy that spans solar systems — one that not only threatens to alter the human race, but the very building blocks of physics that we've evolved to understand.
This hard SF is full of lovingly lengthy passages of technical exposition about everything from quantum mechanics to artificial intelligence. But Cixin Liu supports all of that brain twisting theory with empathetic characters and a strong action-thriller backbone.
For all its universal appeal, The Three-Body Problem is set against a specific backdrop, one that most English-language readers only know from a distance. Many of its major points hinge on the knowledge of Chinese history and culture — and while Ken Liu's translation is clear, tasteful, and lyrical, there's a lot of exposition to chew on. It's worth every ounce of effort. The book's well-earned suspense hinges on moral dilemmas that resonate far beyond its nationality or even its heady, abstract physics.
At what point does science become dogma, and what point does that same dogma become religion? Cixin Liu doesn't pose that question so much as let it play out in a sweeping drama that risks the highest stakes imaginable. If The Three-Body Problem (and the next two books in the series, whose translations are in the works) helps bridge the gap between Eastern and Western SF, it will have performed a great duty for the literary world.
Putting your bra on in the morning may seem like a completely meaningless task, but according to research by one human behavior expert, the way you snap that clasp closed actually reveals a great deal about who you are as a person.
Patti Wood, a body language and human behavior expert who teaches at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, has revealed that the way you put on your bra correlates with four different types of people and personality. 'There are four distinct personality types - drivers, influencers, supporters, and careful correctors - who tend to have very unique ways of doing things, even small tasks,' she told Redbook.
Here, FEMAIL examines each bra-clasping style and what each means in relation to their linked personalities.
If you fasten your bra behind-the-back you're a 'supporter'
People who fall into this personality type tend to follow tradition and stay true to what they have been taught. Patti explained that supporters think carefully before taking any action, so it is unsurprising that supporters prefer the tried and true method for putting their bras on.
Supporters are said to be friendly, thoughtful and great listeners. They'll always remember your birthday and be there for you if you need a shoulder to cry on. When shopping for bras, supporters will mostly likely be found in the fitting room with a group of friends.
If you fasten your bra at the front and then rotate it, you're an 'influencer'
Influencers are charismatic and love to be noticed and appreciated, so when it comes to their lingerie they are drawn to bright colors and added details.
Clasping their bras in the front ensure influencers they will look their best because they will be sure they never missed a hook. They appreciate a good sense of humor and like to be challenged and learn new things, however, they have a tendency to get bored easily. An influencer may not always follow through on things that require an attention to detail or multiple steps.
For many women, deciding what to wear for work every morning can be a stressful and time-consuming experience.
But Jackie Brown, 49, from Surrey, was so fed up of her daily fashion dilemma that she decided to put an end to the problem - by wearing the same outfit every day for a whole month (washed and ironed regularly, of course).
It may sound boring, but Jackie, an editor at women's magazine Good Housekeeping, found that removing her style dilemma from her daily routine helped to start the day on the right foot and boosted her confidence.
She also discovered that despite being worried that she would look boring, nobody noticed that beneath her accessories she was sporting the same garb daily.
She said: 'I used to leave house flustered and in a rush and it wasn't a good way to start the day. Also, I would often feel that I hadn't quite pulled off the outfit.'
'And I found not having to decide about clothes freed my mind up to think about what I was doing that day.'
The result was that Jackie felt calmer and more in control and as a consequence, she felt those around her reacted more positively to her too.
She said: 'I felt good about myself and felt people treated me with more reverence and smiled at me more. '
