The Dragon Boat Festival 篇一

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It has a history of over 2,000 years and is widely celebrated in China and other Asian countries. The festival is known for its exciting dragon boat races, delicious sticky rice dumplings, and the hanging of herbs to ward off evil spirits.

One of the main attractions of the Dragon Boat Festival is the dragon boat races. These races originated from the legend of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman of ancient China. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who was banished by the king he served. In despair, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people admired him and paddled their boats to search for his body. To prevent fish from eating his body, they threw rice dumplings into the river. Today, the dragon boat races are held to commemorate their search for Qu Yuan's body.

Dragon boat racing is a thrilling and energetic sport. The boats are long and narrow, with the head and tail of a dragon carved at each end. Each boat is powered by a team of rowers who paddle in unison to the beat of a drum. The races are often held in rivers or lakes, with teams from different villages or organizations competing against each other. The atmosphere is electric, with spectators cheering on their favorite teams and the sound of drums and gongs filling the air. It is a spectacle that showcases the strength, teamwork, and determination of the participants.

In addition to the dragon boat races, the Dragon Boat Festival is also known for its special food - sticky rice dumplings, or zongzi. Zongzi are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are usually filled with a variety of ingredients such as pork, beans, nuts, and dates. The dumplings are then steamed or boiled for several hours, resulting in a sticky and flavorful treat. Eating zongzi during the festival is believed to bring good luck and protect against evil spirits.

Another tradition of the Dragon Boat Festival is the hanging of herbs. People would hang bundles of herbs, such as wormwood and calamus, on their doors or windows to ward off evil spirits and prevent diseases. It is believed that the strong fragrance of the herbs can repel insects and protect the household from harm. This practice dates back to ancient times when people believed that evil spirits were more active during the summer months.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a time of celebration and cultural heritage. It brings people together to enjoy the excitement of the dragon boat races, indulge in delicious zongzi, and participate in age-old customs. It is a festival that not only showcases the rich history and traditions of China but also promotes unity, teamwork, and the spirit of community.

The exact origins of Duan Wu are unclear, but one traditional view holds that the festival memorializes the Chinese poet Qu Yuan of the Warring States Period. He committed suicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption of the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fish so they would not eat Qu's body. They also sat on long, narrow paddle boats called dragon boats, and tried to scare the fish away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking carved dragon head on the boat's prow(船头).

In the early years of the Chinese Republic, Duan Wu was also celebrated as "Poets' Day," due to Qu Yuan's status as China's first poet of personal renown(名声名望).

Today, people eat bamboo-wrapped steamed glutinous(粘的) rice dumplings called the food originally intended to feed the fish and race dragon boats in memory of Qu's dramatic death.
