在我国各地的旅游宣传资料或景点手册上,此类错误的翻译频繁可见。例如,在深圳某景区的英文宣传资料上,把本来是“electronic materials”却写成了“electron materials”。此外,在上海的有关宣传中,把上海的英文翻译写成shang hai,其实由于上海是地名,应该写成shanghai。虽然这都是一些小的错误,但是却能体现我们的英语翻译水平。所以对于此类问题,一定要注意。
(二)避免出现直译、乱译、音译、硬译等方面的问题
我们汉语在表达一个意思时,有时简简单单的几个字就能表达很深的含义,例如我们经常讲“五讲、四美、三热爱”,五讲是指“讲文明、讲礼貌、讲卫生、讲秩序、讲道德”;四美是指“心灵美、语言美、行为美、环境美”;三热爱是指“热爱祖国、热爱社会主义、热爱中国共产党”;这七个字具有丰富的内容及思想性。在有些对外翻译时却被翻译成了“we advocate three loves,four beauties and five stresses”,这在外国人看了却可能被理解为我们提倡热爱美人与情人了,可能就会闹出笑话。但如果能用“good virtues and noble values”来替代,则可能会得到更好的表达意思。
(三)灵活采用翻译方法
通常我们可以依据以下方法进行处理:增添法、注释法和删减法。一是增词法和注释法。由于中国与讲英语的国家在社会、历史、文化诸方面都存在着差异,中国旅游资源所涉及的内容、背景知识等都是独具中国特色的,有许多东西在英语语言、文化里找不到现成的对应概念,因此,对中国人来说,可将那些人人皆知的常识性东西在中文原稿里省略不写,或是一笔带过。例如,具有中国特色的词语“西域”的英译以适当增补注释性文字为好。可译为:“as a boy…he was well- known in the west region,a vast area including what is now western gansu,xinjiang,and part of central asia”增补后的英译给外国人提供了较为全面、具体的西域概念。二是删减法。在英译时,要注意将那些在汉语原文里面面俱到,词义重复,而对等译成英语后又显繁琐,对原文理解无实质性帮助的字、句删去。这样做,从形式上看英语译文和汉语原文没有保持严格的对等,但从实质意义上看,译文经过删节,反而简明,有助于外国人理解。例如,有这样一段文字:“无论子船还是母船,皆为独木镂空。”在英语词汇里,canoe 一词的意思就是独木凿成的小船,原译者在这里只用了canoe 一字,就把独木镂空的意思表达的恰到好处。试想如果非要对等译成:“the large canoe or the small canoe is made with a single log.”反而画蛇添足,多此一举。
