VOA的慢速英语，语速控制一般每分钟约为90个单词，基本词汇则控制在1500个左右，特别适合一些英语读写具有初中级水平、听说却处于初级阶段的英语学习者。也就是说从VOA的慢速英语入手进行基础训练应该不失为一个恰当的选择。但有不少学员反映，他(她)们听了大量的VOA慢速英语材料，有的已经坚持将近二年了，但是离开这些训练材料他(她)们还是听不懂！究其原因主要是他(们)的基础不牢固，又总是泛泛而听，而且听的时候过分依赖背景材料，自然好像是什么都听懂了，实际上只是因熟记而听懂了学习材料，但听力水平没有真正得以提高。
