这部《悬崖之上》是由张艺谋导演，改编于原创故事，故事背景设在二十世纪三十年代的哈尔滨，当时从苏联学习回来的乌特拉小组前去营救一位证人，由于联络员被特务俘虏叛变，于是小组四人冒死营救。

故事发生在白雪皑皑的冬季，冰雪覆盖，景色非常唯美，但是当时在那样一种白色恐怖之下，美感瞬时被肃杀冷冽的紧张感带入进去。乌特拉小组成员空降到一片雪地里，这里会有人和他们汇合，带他们去哈尔滨完成任务，出于人身安全，他们分为两组，张宪臣和王郁是夫妻，他们为了革命，将孩子托人寄养，没想到养父母被日本人杀害，孩子被迫加入乞讨队伍在哈尔滨乞讨为生，张宪臣和王郁分在两组，他们需要存活住一个人可以去找寻他们的儿女；楚良和小兰是一对情侣，他们也分别在两组，这是他们不能接受的事实，但是也是唯一的办法，互相都是对方的弱点，一旦被捕不堪设想。他们四人都是从苏联学有所成回国，他们的职业素养训练有素，紧要关头他们会牺牲自己保全大家，他们每人分发了一片毒药片。

张宪臣和小兰一路走来，遇到了和他们汇合的人马，张宪臣和来和他们汇合的老冯聊天，这是一个心理战术的聊天，没想到识破了老冯是个特务，小兰为人单纯，楚良告诉她遇事都要留一手，老冯让他们缴械，以免被特务发现，小兰偷偷藏了一件，张宪臣告诉小兰老冯是特务，这时老冯发现端倪，于是他们厮打起来，张宪臣干掉了老冯，他们要争取时间和王郁，楚良会面，组织内有人叛变了，他们处在危险当中。另一组王郁和楚良也和接头人联系上了，他们也是特务派去接应的，他们需要坐火车回哈尔滨。

火车上张宪臣在厕所里留下暗号，有叛徒，王郁接到暗号，但是楚良不知道，特务盯得紧，王郁来不及和楚良说，这时小兰也在火车上，却被火车上的特务误打误撞认为她有问题，带她去检查，楚良告诉和他们接应的人说小兰是他们同伴，王郁为了保护张宪臣他们决定下火车，做另一趟火车。王郁和楚良被安排到一座废宅，等着他们执行任务的当天捕获他们，王郁急中生智吃了她自己随身带的毒药片的一角，造成食物中毒才和楚良说出特务在他们身边。

张宪臣前去营救小兰，他们一路也来到哈尔滨，为了找到王郁，他在街上看到了自己的孩子无法相认，这时他被特务盯住，无奈，最后被捕，在特务所严刑拷打逼供，打死都不说出，最后被枪决。特务所里有一个卧底周乙是他们的同伴，无奈也救不出他，张宪臣说即使他被就出去，他也是一个废人，他不想连累别人，希望周乙可以找到他的孩子，帮助王郁。

周乙联络到王郁和楚良，亮出身份，这也是一个险招，身份暴露会招来杀身之祸，他的存在已经让特务所科长怀疑，但是他们必须要自保和完成任务，他们身份暴露，必须要安全撤离，任务会有新人来完成。特务所长一方面让周乙蹲点小兰出入的地方，一方面又派手下盯着周乙，周乙利用过人的胆识和自己训练有素的身体素质，xxx于科长和他的手下们，并且有条不紊的安排着一切任务顺利进行，但是事情都是有偏差，都会有意外，需要临场发挥，随机应变，需要很多天时地利人和，当时看的我真是胆战心惊，虽然是都学过，但是实践只有一次啊，用生命在博自己，虽然是电影啊，虽然是故事，但是我们现在过的安逸，当时肯定是有这么一群抛头颅洒热血的人替我们负重前行的啊，他们也是用命在搏斗，去实践，所有的事情都是没有演习，没有预演，最后楚良被特务们追捕，不能将周乙暴露，他选择了开枪打周乙，然后自己服毒自尽。即使这样，特务科长也不是很信任周乙，还好周乙设计的一连串事情都有一个背锅的特务，才逃过科长的眼线。

楚良为了就出王郁牺牲了自己，王郁必须要活着，因为张宪臣已经牺牲了，周乙找到了孩子，将他们安全的送到了王郁身边。小兰是和周乙接头完成任务的唯一人，她过人的记忆力将任务熟记在脑中，然后查出了接头暗号，顺利的营救了证人。

周乙和小兰暂时安全，周一继续安插在特务所里，但是危险时刻存在，周乙将组织内的叛徒找到处置了他，因为他的叛变，害死了张宪臣和楚良，故事是这样，现实里有多少叛徒不知害死了多少革命者，他们都有家，都有自己的理想，就这样因为叛徒，革命被阻挡了，故事完结了，心情还沉浸在里面，很心疼，也很欣慰我们现在的美好生活无法和他们诉说，感谢他们的付出。
