The Origin of Chinese New Year

Article One: The Ancient Myth

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. According to ancient Chinese mythology, there was a terrifying beast called Nian that lived deep in the sea. Every year, on the eve of the new year, Nian would come out and wreak havoc on villages, devouring crops and even people.

One day, an old man appeared in a village and claimed that he knew how to scare away Nian. He advised the villagers to hang red lanterns and scrolls on their doors, set off firecrackers, and make loud noises to frighten the beast. The villagers followed his instructions, and to their surprise, Nian never returned.

Since then, the tradition of celebrating Chinese New Year with red decorations, firecrackers, and lion dances has been passed down from generation to generation. It is believed that these customs drive away evil spirits and bring good luck and prosperity in the coming year.

Article Two: The Lunar Calendar and the God of Wealth

Chinese New Year is not only a time to scare away evil spirits but also a celebration of the Lunar New Year. The date of Chinese New Year varies each year as it follows the lunar calendar. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and has been used in China for thousands of years.

Legend has it that there was once a god named Zao Jun who lived in heaven. Zao Jun was responsible for recording the good and bad deeds of each person. On Chinese New Year's Eve, Zao Jun would descend to earth to inspect households and deliver blessings or punishments accordingly.

To ensure a favorable visit from Zao Jun, people would clean their houses thoroughly, decorate them with red lanterns and couplets, and prepare offerings of food and drinks. It was believed that by doing so, Zao Jun would be pleased and bring good fortune to the family for the coming year.

Furthermore, Chinese New Year is also associated with the God of Wealth, who is believed to bring prosperity and good luck. People offer prayers and burn incense to the God of Wealth, hoping to receive his blessings and abundance in wealth.

In conclusion, Chinese New Year has a rich history and is deeply rooted in Chinese mythology and traditional customs. It is a time for families to come together, pay respects to their ancestors, and welcome the new year with joy and auspiciousness. The celebrations and traditions associated with Chinese New Year continue to be cherished and practiced by Chinese communities around the world.
