Father's Day: The Origin

Article 1

Father's Day is a special day dedicated to honoring fathers and celebrating their role in the family. The origin of Father's Day can be traced back to ancient times, where various cultures celebrated fathers and their contributions to society.

One of the earliest known celebrations of fathers can be found in ancient Babylon. Around 4,000 years ago, a young boy named Elmesu carved a message on a clay tablet wishing his father good health and a long life. This heartfelt message is considered to be the oldest known Father's Day card in history.

In modern times, the official establishment of Father's Day can be credited to Sonora Smart Dodd from the United States. Inspired by a Mother's Day sermon, Dodd wanted to create a similar day to honor fathers. She believed that fathers deserve recognition for their love, sacrifices, and guidance.

On June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day celebration took place in Spokane, Washington. Dodd's efforts gained momentum, and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. However, it wasn't until 1972 that Father's Day became an official holiday in the United States when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

The concept of Father's Day quickly spread to other countries, with each nation adapting the celebration to their own customs and traditions. In many countries, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, while others observe it on different dates.

Father's Day is celebrated worldwide as a day to honor fathers, express gratitude, and strengthen the bond between fathers and their children. It is a time to show appreciation and love through gifts, cards, special meals, and spending quality time together.

In conclusion, Father's Day has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. From ancient Babylon to modern times, the celebration of fathers and their significant role in society has remained constant. Father's Day is a time to acknowledge and cherish the love and sacrifices made by fathers worldwide.

Article 2

Father's Day, an occasion to honor and appreciate fathers, has an interesting history that varies from country to country. Although the concept of Father's Day has existed for centuries, the modern celebration we know today has its roots in the United States.

The official establishment of Father's Day in the United States is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd. Inspired by a Mother's Day sermon, Dodd wanted to create a similar day to honor fathers. She believed that fathers deserved recognition for their love, sacrifices, and guidance.

The first Father's Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Dodd's efforts gained momentum, and gradually, Father's Day gained popularity across the country. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day, but it wasn't until 1972 that Father's Day became an official holiday in the United States when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

The tradition of celebrating fathers on a specific day quickly spread to other countries. However, the dates and customs associated with Father's Day vary across nations. For example, many countries celebrate Father's Day on the third Sunday of June, while others observe it on different dates throughout the year.

In Germany, Father's Day is known as Vatertag and is celebrated on Ascension Day, which is a public holiday. It is a common tradition for men to go on hikes, drink beer, and enjoy a day of relaxation. In Thailand, Father's Day is celebrated on December 5th, the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who is considered the father of the nation.

Regardless of the specific date or customs, Father's Day is universally recognized as a day to honor fathers and express gratitude for their love and support. It is a time for families to come together, give gifts, and spend quality time with their fathers.

In conclusion, Father's Day has a diverse history and is celebrated in various ways around the world. While its origins can be traced back to the United States, each country has adapted the celebration to their own customs and traditions. Whether it is on the third Sunday of June or a different date, Father's Day serves as a reminder to appreciate and recognize the important role fathers play in our lives.

父亲节的由来英文版 篇三

Sonora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.

Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state.

After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Fat

her's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.

QUOTES ABOUT DAD

"A father is always making his baby into a little woman. And when she is a woman he turns her back again." -- Enid Bagnold

"None of you can ever be proud enough of being the child of SUCH a Father who has not his equal in this world-so great, so good, so faultless. Try, all of you, to follow in his footsteps and don't be discouraged, for to be really in everything like him none of you, I am sure, will ever be. Try, therefore, to be like him in some points, and you will have acquired a great deal." -- Victoria, Queen of England

"That is the thankless position of the father in the family-the provider for all, and the enemy of all." -- J. August Strindberg

"It is a wise father that knows his own child." -- William Shakespeare

"One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters." -- English Proverb

"To be a successful father . . . there's one absolute rule: when you have a kid, don't look at it for the first two years." -- Ernest Hemingway

"I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father's protection." -- Sigmund Freud
