Teaching content: Reading and Speaking —The Sampler Teaching Time: 40 minutes Teaching goal: after this class, the students are expected to be able to 1 tell the story 2 learn the six elements of a narration 3 write a narration 4 learn some skills when offer others helps. Teaching difficulties: 1. Describe the personality of a character andprovide evidence tosupport this kind of personality. 2. Avoid hurting others when we offer help Teaching points: 1. Learn the six elements of the narration 2. Master the main idea of the text 3. Analysis the characters of the figures Teaching Methods: Situational Approach; Communicative Approach; Cooperative Language learning; task-based Language learning Etc. Teaching Procedures Pre-reading Activities StepⅠWarm-up(3 minutes) Ask the students to think the question “What is your ideal girlfriend or boyfriend?” The teacher gives some characters, and ask the students, if it is your ideal girlfriend or boyfriend, please stand up, otherwise, just sit down. (The purpose of this activity is to give some adjectives to state a person’s character, and activate the class.) StepⅡ lead-in (2 minutes) Show the students some pictures related to the text, and ask some questions. 1. Is the old man happy? 2. What is the man doing? 3. How many people are there in the picture? 4. Can you guess what the relationships are between them? 5. Can you guess where they are? 6. what happened between them? 7. The boy said: will you do me a favor. Do you think the old man will “do a favor” for the boy? After these questions, ask the students to read the text and find the answers the above questions. (The purpose of this activity is to give some indication to the text before reading, and let the students read the text with questions and clear purpose.) While-Reading Activities (27 minutes) StepⅠ Main Idea Learning (10 minutes) 1. After reading, answer the above questions with the whole class together. 2. Learn the six elements of the narration, and draw a table on the blackboard. Ask the students to find the items from the text. time certain week during the Christmas season place in a certain store figures the old man, the shop girl, the narrator (I) Cause The store provides the service of sampling before to buy. I wonder weather some one takes advantage of free sampling. One day, the shop girl confirmed my wonder. Process The poor old man cannot afford to his favorite puddings. He just samples but never buys. I am pitiful to him, and try to help him, but he is dignity and sensitive, so he refused my help. Climax & End 1. In order to save honor, the old man forced himself to buy the most expensive puddings with all his coins. 2. He never goes there to sample the puddings. 3. I feel uneasy, regretful. StepⅡ Structure Learning of the Narration (7 minutes) 1. Ask the students to pide the text into several parts according the development of the story and the main ideas of each part. Give the students seven minutes, after the time, ask some students to share their ideas. Parts Paragraphs Main Ideas Ⅰ 1—3 The introduction of background of the story and the theme —Some people took advantage of free sampling Ⅱ 4—9 An example: the description of how the old man sampled the pudding Ⅲ 10—15 Climax: I wanted to help the old man but that hurt his dignity and I was embarrassed too. the purpose of this activity is to make the students grasp the main idea of the text and its logical structure)
